Fiat Lux (Let there be light)

eric.stemen

Fiat Lux is the Latin phrase for "let there be light", an appropriate title for the video that a friend suggested to me.
For the next two minutes you will join me on my journey underground to see how formations and rooms look with an incredibly bright light source.
Even people who have been caving for years rarely if ever see rooms and formations lit up this way. This video is my best attempt at showing the beauty of caves without being there in person.
Enjoy!

Goodmorning Eric,

I voted you over 5 stars, good luck :)

Best Regards,

Thanks for the comments Daniel and Ryan, and also thanks for acting at talent in the video! Turning on a bright light in a cave is always a unique experience(at least for me). With a headlamp I can get a pretty good idea of how a room looks, but like you said "With a proper light a cave comes to life".
To bad more of the grotto didn't get a chance to see the room with the pit lit up(the first part of the video)....it was much more impressive in real life.
.
It's also a shame the video is being voted down so much, but I guess other people are either using proxy servers to keep their own score up and other people's scores down, or they just know a lot of people who are willing to help them vote.
Thanks again, hope to go caving very soon.

Eric, I really enjoyed this video as well especially the way you make a person feel like he/she is in the cave because of the great quality. With the proper light, a cave comes to life even more than when your exploring one with a headlamp. Too bad others are just giving you a bad ranking because they can't handle your level of competition and they fear how great your video depicts the power of light. lol
And I agree with Ryan, I can't wait until we go underground again. Great job with the video and I really like the beginning as well with the Petzl introduction.

Eric..awesome video man..Everytime I watch it im amazed at the quality of the video and your talent..Way to go man..cant wait till we go underground again..

Thanks everyone!
Cat: I used between one and two lights for the video.
The main light I used was a 150W HID powered by a car battery and an inverter....taking that through caves was a pain but thankfully I had help from some friends and the Fort Knox Grotto.
My second light source was a 48W LED bank. For that light I used a 12V 12AH battery.
Carrying the small Jib and tripod through these caves was also a challenge but it brought life to these stationary objects.
.
Thanks for you complements also Don. I've been slacking on making this into a long form documentary, but I've recently been working in Louisville for a new production company and have been spending most of my time there editing. Since I've started this job I realized how much I enjoy editing(previously I enjoyed editing but then around the time I started to use Avid I suddenly disliked it).
.
I need to start working on this again. I really like your idea with the virtual tour of Mammoth Cave and taking visitors to areas they can't go. I know WKYU PBS just did a documentary on Mammoth Cave so I'll need to check that out next time I go down there to see if their video is similar to that idea.
.
TV stations would be incredible to have them play a long form of this.
Thanks again.
eric.

Outstanding! You should contact KET/Kentucky Living about doing an episode on our magnificent caves. I bet National Geographic/Discovery/TLC or others would be interested as well. Or how about a documentary for Mammoth Cave National Park to give visitors a virtual tour of other area caves that are inaccessible to most people. You are a truly gifted luminary of videography.
Cat
Looks very sharp - how did you power your lights?

Great video!

The music, and scenery is superb. Liked the narrative that went along with it.
